It was a successful weekend for the Corner Brook Royals as they earned triumphs over the Port aux Basques Mariners and the Stephenville Jets on Friday and Saturday night, respectively.

In Friday night’s game at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, Kurt Etchegary picked up a hat trick for the Royals in a 5-2 win over the Mariners, with Tyler Hunt and Iain Pilgrim providing the rest of the offence.

Steven Lomond and Luke Parsons did the damage for the Mariners.

Jeff Murphy registered the win between the pipes, making 37 saves.

Ryley Nadon was beaten four times on 28 shots, before giving way to Byron Francis, who kicked aside eight of nine.

Etchegary opened the scoring, shorthanded, at 17:24 of the first, from Nick Childs, before Tyler Hunt made it 2-0 shortly thereafter at 19:39. Stephen Gillard and Ryan Hawco drew the assists.

Parsons quickly cut the deficit in half 45 seconds into the second period, from Trent Johanson and Robert Parsons, but Etchegary burned the Mariners power-play unit again at 5:40, notching his second shortie of the night, this one unassisted.

Etchegary completed the hat trick on the power play, from Ryan Hawco, at 4:22 of the third.

Pilgrim then made it 5-1 at 13:10, from Josh Smith and Ryan McMackin, while Lomond capped the game’s scoring with a power-play goal at 18:41, with Drew Nadon supplying the help.

On Saturday night, the Royals thumped the Jets 10-3 at the Stephenville Dome.

Pilgrim scored three goals in the win, while Etchegary and Hunt each found the back of the net twice. Matt Colbourne, Wilfred Bellows and Stephen Gillard added single markers.

Brad Lucus, Jonathan McCarthy and Timmy Caines got on the board for the Jets.

Ian Woolfrey was the winning goalie, making 29 stops, while Andrew Murley blocked 26 of 36 in the loss.

League action resumes with a game between the Mariners and Jets 8 p.m. Friday in Stephenville.
