Having gone 4-0 since the opening of the Central West Senior Hockey season, many felt the true test for the Gander Flyers would be the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts.
They passed that test tonight, as the two teams faced each other for the first time this season.
Gander had home ice advantage at the Steele Community Centre.
It was a back and forth, down to the wire game - bringing about the hardest fought win for the Gander team since the season opened.
For the Flyers, Jordan Esscott opened things up in first, providing the only goal of the period.
The Flyers continued to apply pressure into the second period, with Andrew Ryan and Brandon Hynes providing goals for the team.
The Cataracts got on the board in the second with goals from Danny Wicks and Andre Gill.
Early in the third and feeling the pressure, Gill scored again bringing the game back to even.
The Flyers were quick to respond, as Scott Doody provided the fourth, pull-ahead goal.
Doody stepped up for the team once more in the dying seconds with an empty net goal to secure a hometown win.
The Flyers are back in action Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Eastlink Events Centre, where they will face the Clarenville Caribous.
The Cataracts are also in Clarenville this weekend, facing the Caribous on Saturday night.
