GANDER, NL - It was a hard-fought win, but the Gander Flyers’ hopes of a first-place finish in the Central West Senior Hockey League are still alive.
The Flyers have to win their last two games of the regular season to come out on top. A first-place finish would provide the team with a direct bye into the finals.
The first challenge of the weekend were the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts, at the Steele Community Centre in Gander, on Saturday night.
The Flyers established themselves in the first, with a 3-2 lead. Jordan Escott, Ryan Mathenson and Andrew Paul would score, with Rodi Short and Andrew Brennan picking up goals for the Cataracts.
The hometown team would maintain that lead throughout the second and into the third. The Flyers continued to press for an assurance goal, which came in the form of empty netter from Escott, with 53 seconds left on the clock for a 4-2 win.
The Flyers will face their final hurdle in their quest for first place Sunday afternoon, at the Steele Community Centre at 1:30 p.m., where they will take on the Clarenville Caribous.
