GLOVERTOWN, NL – Atom hockey teams from Glovertown, Clarenville, Marystown and Corner Brook joined in Glovertown this weekend for an eight-game tournament.
On Sunday morning the Glovertown Tornadoes defeated the Marystown Mariners 4-2 in the championship game to take the gold medal. The Tornadoes went into the game with four wins and no loses, while Marystown went in with three wins and one loss.
Both teams were feeling confident before the game with Glovertown shutting out Corner Brook and Marystown shutting out Clarenville in Saturday’s last two games.
Marystown’s Nicholas Francis scored the first goal of the game and another in the first period. Despite some good stick handling, the Mariners could not score again. The Tornadoes were able to create several breakaways and scored one goal courtesy of Georgia Collins and three goals by Braden Blackwood.
Impressive goaltending on both sides stopped several more would-be scores on net.
