Anyone looking for an indication of the state of female baseball in Grand Falls-Windsor, needed to check out the 2019 Baseball Atlantic 14-years and under girls’ baseball championship Sunday in Fredericton, N.B.
Held Sept. 6-8, the two entries from this province, aptly named NL Black and NL Burgundy, competed against teams from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Grand Falls-Windsor was represented by three players — Dedra Lyver, Holly Russell and Faith Coates, and coach Claire Dwyer, at the event.
Russell, Lyver and Dwyer were members of the NL Black team that ran the table and won all five of its games en route to the championship.
In the final game, the Newfoundland squad defeated the host New Brunswick 7-6 to bring home the title. Russell was her team’s player of the game.
On their way to the championship, NL Black got wins over New Brunswick, Nova Scotia White, Nova Scotia Blue and Prince Edward Island.
Coates found herself on the NL Burgundy team that finished in fourth place after dropping the bronze medal game to Nova Scotia Blue 8-2.
NL Burgundy made it as far as the semifinals where they fell 5-4 to New Brunswick. They picked up round robin wins over Nova Scotia Blue and Nova Scotia White, while losing to aforementioned New Brunswick.
