ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Grand Falls-Windsor native Terry Ryan Sr. is headed to the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame.
Ryan is one of five inductees for 2019 and will be inducted during Sport Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala on April 27 in St. John's.
Ryan had a successful career as a player in both hockey and baseball.
He played for the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Hockey Association from 1969-1972, winning multiple awards, including rookie of the year in 1969 and the team’s top scorer and MVP honours in 1972.
Drafted by the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the World Hockey Association (WHA), he posted 13 goals and six assists in 76 games as a rookie in 1973.
Ryan played in the International Hockey League for two seasons where he was fifth in league scoring in 1975 with 141 points.
As well, he played seven seasons of provincial senior hockey with Memorial University, the Gander Flyers, Mike’s Shamrocks and Stephenville Jets and the St. John’s Capitals.
Ryan, whose son, Terry Ryan Jr., was a former first-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens, was inducted into the Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Fame in 2000.
Ryan, meanwhile, represented the province at numerous national junior and senior baseball tournaments, developing a reputation as a clutch hitter. At 15, he was selected to the Canadian All-Star team. During his career, he won three provincial junior championships – two with Grand Falls and one with St. John’s – and nine senior titles with the St. John’s Capitals.
He is entering the NL Sports Hall of Fame in the athlete category for hockey.
The other 2019 inductees are Angus Barrett in the athlete/builder category for soccer, Ward Gosse in the athlete category for softball and hockey, Bill Hogan in the builder category for swimming and Michael Ryder in the athlete category for hockey.
“Our five inductees for 2019 are individuals who have made notable contributions throughout their careers creating legacies that deserve to be commemorated,” Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame chair Ed Murphy said in a news release.
“Their achievements help promote amateur sport and inspire Newfoundland and Labradorians in sport and life.”
