Gymnast Michael Drover of St. John’s will be the flagbearer for Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2019 Canada Winter Games next month in Red Deer, Alta.

This will be the second Canada Games for Drover, the Campia athlete, who competed in 2015 in Prince George, B.C.

Unfortunately, Drover wasn’t present for the N.L. Canada Games team rally held Monday night at the PowerPlex (Provincial Training Centre) in St. John’s. He was storm-stayed in the Maritimes after taking part — along with other Newfoundland gymnasts — in a pre-Games meet in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Fellow gymnast Jane Young, who will also be in Red Deer, took Drover’s place carrying the flag at Monday’s east coast rally (another rally was held concurrently in Corner Brook).

Among those speaking at the gathering was Premier Dwight Ball and St. John’s Edge guard and reigning National Basketball League of Canada MVP Carl English, who competed for the province at the 1997 Canada Games in Brandon, Man..

The 2019 Canada Games are being held Feb. 15 to March 3. This province is expected to have over 240 athletes taking part.
