LABRADOR WEST, N.L.

Minor hockey in Labrador West is a large and important part of the culture of the community.

There are volunteers who commit endless hours to bring together the components necessary to deliver a quality minor hockey organization.

Shawn Dyke is one of those local people with his feet on the ground for the kids in minor hockey.

Dyke is the technical director of the Labrador West Minor Hockey Association. He oversees all local coaches from Novice to Midget age groups including the female teams.

Recently Gary Dove, provincial coaching coordinator of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador, came to Labrador West and held a hockey coaches training clinic at the Bill Chaplin Arena in Wabush.

Dove held a clinic with some local coaches providing a course that sees them certified at the national level. This particular session was an entry-level clinic for the coaches with further training to follow in the future.

This program and those that will follow is hoped to help coaches deliver quality training to players on an ongoing basis.
