The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts are one win away from capturing their fourth Herder Memorial Trophy championship in six years.
The Cataracts grabbed a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven 2019 Herder final, blanking the Southern Shore Breakers 2-0 on home ice at Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium Friday night.
Grand Falls-Windsor can win the provincial senior championship tonight at Joe Byrne. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
A.J. Whiffen stopped 36 shots for the shutout, and Alex Dalley scored what would be the game-winner at 6:47 of the second period, an unassisted effort.
Andrew Brennan scored an insurance goal at the 8:48 mark of the third period, on a play with Nick Lindstrom and Sam Hounsell.
Mark Yetman was equally strong in the Breakers’ net, stopping 37 of 39 shots.
The Cataracts won three straight Herders between 2014-16. The C.B.N. CeeBee Stars won in 2017, and the Clarenville Caribous took last year’s Herder.
