Fresh off their third straight Herder Memorial Trophy championship title, the Cats qualified after defeating the Lameque Au P’tit Mousse of New Brunswick in a 9-5 scoring frenzy Friday night and 4-0 victory tonight to sweep the best of three Atlantic qualifier series.
“I think that it was certainly much better defensively which was key for us,” Cats assistant coach Paul Glavine told the Advertiser after the second game. “It was tough getting up 8-0 last night and I thought we played a little loose in the second half of the game. Our focus coming in tonight was certainly to be strong defensively, we know we will need that once we get to the Allan Cup. It’s a tough tournament.”
Saturday night’s game didn’t look much like the game the night before.
There was no score after the first, with Danny Wicks netting the first gaol 52 seconds into the second.
Stuart MacRae and Cam Fergus rounded out second period scoring.
Arron Asham scored the final goal late in the third.
“Lameque certainly showed that they are a quality hockey club,” Glavine said. “They brought it tonight. I think we got the big save when we needed it.
"With the quality of goaltending that you see on the ice right now once a team gets down by two or three it’s a very tough hill to climb. But give them credit, they worked hard until the final buzzer, they have a reputation as a hard working team. This is their second taste of Allan Cup qualifying so I’m sure in future years their teams will be built a little bit different and we will expect them to be very competitive in years to come.”
The Cats will represent the Atlantic region at the national senior hockey championship April 11-16 in Steinbach, Manitoba.
