Those are the reasons why Liz Companion always loved playing hockey with the girls no matter where life took her as the daughter of two parents — Ted and Debbie Companion — who were members of the Canadian Forces.
The 27-year-old was born in North Bay, Ont., but spent a number of years in Cold Lake, Alta., and Gander before deciding to make the move to Corner Brook one year ago to begin her career as a paramedic with Reliable Ambulance.
Sports is something she grabbed onto at a young age, trying her hand at softball, soccer and a number of other sports before quickly realizing that her heart belonged to hockey.
Companion really had a blast playing hockey when she lived in Gander because there was a fair bit of interest in shooting around the puck and the girls would make the trip to Corner Brook to compete in the female division of the annual Captain Cook recreational hockey tournament when a female division was introduced a few years back.
Companion is hoping to get back on the ice this winter as she strives to recruit women over 20 years of age to play hockey once a week and possibility play in a few tournaments, especially the Captain Cook event.
In recent years. Companion has missed being involved in the game.
To that end, she’s already taken steps to get back into the game by volunteering to serve as the manager for the local 20U female hockey team.
Now, the next step is to get the equipment back on so she can have some fun of her own.
Hockey is a great way for her to deal with the stresses of life.
She encourages other women to give it a shot because they may just love it like she does.
With that in mind, Companion hopes to get a regular women’s hockey game started in the coming months.
She saw others try to get women’s hockey underway in the city over the past year, but nothing ever materialized, so now she wants to see if she can make it happen after a co-worker told her about a few female friends who would probably want to do it.
She has had some success in numbers, figuring she has a dozen or so players ready to go, so she hopes to book some ice time in the new year.
