GLOVERTOWN, NL – Staff and volunteers at Glovertown Gardens and Lewisporte Stadium worked this week to host a peewee hockey mega-tournament. Lewisporte was filling in as host after an ammonia leak shut down the original host – Gander’s Steele Community Centre.
Round robin play divided 16 teams into four divisions. Divisions 1 and 4 played in Glovertown while divisions 2 and 3 faced off in Lewisporte. In division 4, The Bonavista Cabots took gold, Stephenville took silver, and Sheshatshui took bronze. In division 3, gold went to Grand Falls-Windsor, silver to Harbour Grace, and bronze to Marystown. In division 2 Beothic beat out Green Bay South for gold, leaving Greeen Bay South with silver while Gander took bronze. In division 1, Twillingate, defeated a combined team from Glovertown and Bay d’Espoir for gold in a shootout, leaving Bay d’Espoir/Glovertown with silver. Placentia took bronze.
It wasn’t the only hockey happening over Easter holidays in the province. Close to 5,500 players and 350 teams laced up and took to the ice for tournaments this week.
