GANDER, N.L. — A central showdown is set to get underway this weekend as the Gander Flyers and Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts vie for the chance to represent the region at the Herder championships.
The best-of-seven series for the central division of the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League starts in Gander with two games, March 2-3, at the Steele Community Centre.
The league was formed back in 2018, as a means of ensuring the Central West Senior Hockey League and East Coast Senior Hockey League would survive another season by incorporating interlocking play.
According to a Cataracts press release, competition between the Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander teams has been close all season, “with the Flyers winning six of the 10 contests between the two teams — the deciding factor ending in the Flyers favour because of two overtime losses by the Cats to the Flyers.”
The Cataracts are expecting a close series.
