Sabres still in second after recent clash for first

SPRINGDALE, NL — The hometown Springdale Braves came out flying Sunday in the first period against the Northeast Sabres and held on for a 7-5 win to grab the league lead in the standings.

The Sabres of Baie Verte came into the weekend having only suffered defeat once in six games in the Central Senior Intermediate Hockey League season. The expansion Braves beat them twice in Springdale to improve to 6-2 on the season.

The Braves scored five goals in the first period to grab a 5-2 lead in a wild period of hockey.

The Braves won 7-6 in a shootout Saturday night. The Sabres are now 5-2-1 on the season.

Braves 7, Sabres 5

Josh Osmond scored twice to lead the Braves to the victory, while teammates TJ Johanson, Ryan Burton, and Chris Budgell added a goal and an assist apiece. Keith Noble and Daryl Robinson also scored for the Braves. Jordan Snow collected three assists in the win.

Jordan Cramm had a goal and two assists for the Sabres, while teammate Rick Canning had a goal and an assist. Jasper Dicks and PJ Budgell scored the other goals in the loss.

Game results in Saturday’s 7-6 victory for the Braves over the Sabres was unavailable as of deadline.

Central Senior Intermediate Hockey League action resumes Jan. 6/7 weekend. The Braves will in Lewisporte to play the Seahawks, while the Sabres will be in Twillingate to play the Combines.

BAIE VERTE, NL — The Northeast Sabres earned a home-ice sweep over the Lewisporte Seahawks this past weekend.

The pair of victories extends their Central Senior Intermediate Hockey League-leading record to 5-1 in the early season, and keeps the two-time champions as the apparent team to beat again this season.

Baie Verte got seven goals from six different players in Sunday’s second game of the weekend series with the Seahawks as the hometown fans went home happy.

Rookie high school player Cam Regular started the scoring near the midway mark of the first period with his first goal of the season, and the rest of the team followed from there. Jasper Dicks ended a big weekend with two goals and an assist in the game, while Nick Callahan, Steve Boone, Jordan Robinson, and Rick Canning also scored in the win. Ryan Parsons collected a pair of assists.

The Sabres scored twice in the opening two periods to lead 4-0 and avoided a second-straight chaotic third period with three goals in a dominating second half of the final frame to keep the Seahawks down.

Mark Molloy scored the lone Lewisporte goal near the midway mark of the third period, but the team could not build any momentum from it.

Rob Roberts earned the victory in the goal over Chris Prior.

Sabres 8, Seahawks 5

Baie Verte built a big 6-1 lead heading into the third period of the Saturday night showdown and held on for the 8-5 win after a six-goal flurry in the final frame.

Brett Robinson had four goals and two assists, while teammate Jasper Dicks had a hat trick and a five-point game for the victors. Rob Robinson collected a goal and two assists, while both Tax Winsor and Rick Canning picked up three assists each in the win.

Hunter Downton led Lewisporte in the loss with a goal and two assists, while teammates Karter Mullett and Lucas Eveleigh notched a goal and assist each. Andrew Temple and Morgan Thorne also scored a goal apiece.

The Springdale Braves had the weekend off. The expansion Braves are off to a solid 4-2 record.

 

SPRINGDALE, NL — The Springdale Braves split from its previous habits and got a big home-ice sweep on the weekend during Central Senior Intermediate Hockey League action.

The hometown team downed the Twillingate Combines in a pair of games to leap frog the team that came in with an identical 2-2 record. The Braves are now 4-2 on the year after opening the season with a pair of splits in its first two weekends of action.

Braves 3, Combines 2

Trenton Johanson broke a scoreless tie in the second period of Sunday’s game and later added his second game to put the Braves ahead 2-1. They would hold on for the 3-2 victory behind a goal from Sherman McKay. Keith Noble picked up a pair of assist in the win.

Jody Hicks and John Hull scored third period goals for Twillingate.

Braves 5, Combines 3

In Saturday night’s game, Scott Doody scored twice for a three-point game in the Braves’ win. Springdale skated to a 3-0 lead and held on for the win with an empty netter from Johanson who added an assist. Doug Kehoe and Josh Osmond rounded out the scoring.

Nathan Rogers, Sheldon Brown, and Hull scored for Twillingate.

The Northeast Sabres, who are 3-1, are in action this weekend against the Lewisporte Seahawks in Baie Verte. The Braves are off until Dec. 16/17.

 

SPRINGDALE, NL — The Springdale Braves continued along a .500 record in its inaugural season in the Central Senior Intermediate Hockey league with its second straight split to start the year.

They downed the Exploits Blades 6-3 Saturday night in their home opener, but couldn’t keep the momentum going on home ice Sunday dropping a 6-4 decision to the team out of Grand Falls-Windsor. The Blades are also now 2-2 on the season.

Neil Oake and Andrew Ricketts scored twice to lead Exploits to Sunday’s victory. Matt Antle added a goal and an assist, while Justin Hollaway also scored.

Alex Goudie scored twice for the hometown Braves, while Trenton Johanson and Daryl Robinson each chipped in offensively with a goal and an assist.

Braves 6, Blades 3

Ryan Burton and Daniel Oxford each scored twice to lead the Braves to the Saturday night win. Johanson scored a goal and assisted on two others, while Chris Budgell had a pair of assists. Jeremy Drover had the other goal for the Braves.

Burke had a gal and assist to pace the Blades, while Oake and Zack Sampsob also scored in the loss.

The Northeast Sabres had the weekend off. The two-time defending champions sit atop the league standings with a 3-1 record. The Twillingate Combines swept the Lewisporte Seahawks to improve to 2-2. The Seahawks are 0-4 to start the season.

The Braves are hosting a pair of games in Springdale again this weekend. The Twillingate Combines will be in town for games Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. The Northeast Sabres are off until they host the Lewisporte Seahawks Dec 2/3.

 

BAIE VERTE, NL — The Northeast Sabres grab top spot in the Central Senior Intermediate Hockey league with a pair of weekend victories.

The team out of Baie Verte defeated the Twillingate Combines 2-1 Sunday behind a pair of goals from Travis Champion.

Saturday night was much more of an offensive game with the Sabres beating the Combines 8-5. Champion again led the way for the Sabres with a hat trick, while Brady Morey and Blake Stratton had two goals each. Jordan Robinson added a single marker to the scoresheet.

The Springdale Braves were off this past weekend. They sit at 1-1 on the season.

 

BAIE VERTE, NL — The two-time defending Central Senior Intermediate Hockey League champion Northeast Sabres kicked off the new season Saturday night with a 7-2 victory over the Exploits Blades.

However, they couldn’t keep the momentum going on home ice at the Tommy Ricketts Arena Sunday, falling to the same Blades team by a 10-5 margin. Goal scorers were unavailable for the games out of Baie Verte.

The expansion Springdale Braves fell short in their first game of the 2017/2018 season, losing on the road 2-1 to the Lewisporte Seahawks. Josh Osmond scored a late goal fro the Braves to provide some hope for late heroics that didn’t come to fruition.

The Braves rebounded nicely from the loss in Game 2. They jumped out to 3-0 and 4-1 leads before holding on for a 4-3 win — their first of the campaign and return to senior hockey. Keith Noble, Chris Budgell, Jordan Snow and Dave Byrne all scored for the Braves in the win.

Goal scorers were provided by the Braves.
