ST. ANTHONY, N.L. — St. Anthony played host this year to the 2019 All Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Midget D Hockey Tournament.

Six teams from across the island – St. Anthony Polars, Bay D’Espoir Blizzards, Bishop’s Falls Midgets, Bonavista Cabots, North East Eagles and United Town Pirates – squared off from April 22 to 24 at the Polar Centre.

The North East Eagles (Torbay) were victorious this year, winning the final over the Bonavista Cabots by a score of 7-0. Goalie Brandon Summers registered the shutout.

Parks and Recreation director Scott Coish was pleased with how the event went, feeling the attendance was strong and the games were competitive.

Hall of Fame inductee

Every year, during the Easter hockey tournament, the St. Anthony Advisory Committee announces a new member to its Hall of Fame.

For 2019 the inductee was Cyril Simmonds.

Simmonds was recognized for his 50 years of volunteer work in St. Anthony.

He has been involved in many different groups including serving as both player and president for the senior hockey and commercial hockey leagues, president and coach for the minor hockey league, and for his time in the St. Anthony Lions Club where he has served in various capacities including president.
