A rough weekend got off to a tough start for the Stephenville Jets in Corner Brook on Friday night, as they dropped a 4-3 decision in overtime to the hometown Royals at the civic centre.
Stephen Gillard scored the game-winning goal in the extra frame, with Tyler Hunt, Daniel Noseworthy and Scott Delaney notching the other markers.
Ryan Perrier picked up a pair in the losing cause, while Nathan Ellsworth scored once.
Jeff Murphy backstopped the victory with a 38-save performance, outdueling Ryan Hancock, who kicked aside 39 shots.
Hunt opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 5:49 of the first period, from Josh Smith.
Noseworthy struck at 3:49 of the second to make it a 2-0 game, with Ryan McMackin and Steven Day assisting.
The Jets stormed back in a hurry to start the third, however, with Ellsworth lighting the lamp 59 seconds into the period, from Liam Frigault and Pat Alexander, before Perrier picked up his first of the night, from Ellsworth, at 2:54.
Perrier then scored what looked to be the dagger with 1:24 remaining in the game, with Michael Mahar and Joshua Oake drawing the assists.
But Delaney answered back on a power play with 15 seconds left on the clock to even things up. Smith and Iain Pilgrim drew the assists.
From there, Gillard scored at 2:24 of overtime to lift the Royals to the win. Tristan Dower-Nichols provided the lone assist.
In Saturday night’s action, the Port aux Basques Mariners laid a 10-4 beating on the Jets.
Greg Edgar recorded a hat trick in the win, while the rest of the damage was done by Brett Robinson (2), Darren Dean (2), Jasper Dicks, Trent Johanson and Dylan Savory.
Dicks picked up seven points in total in the contest, while Robinson accumulated five.
Pat Alexander scored twice in the defeat, while Liam Frigault and Nolan Pearson also found the back of the net.
