PILLEY’S ISLAND, NL — Indian River High continued its regional success in the early months of the school year, claiming three out of four championships in the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Central West provincial qualifier recently held in King’s Point. 

The Springdale runners claimed team banners for first place and the right to represent the region at provincials in the junior girls’, senior girls’ and senior boys’ divisions.  
The only team to disrupt the streak of the Indian River athletes were the junior boys of Dorset Collegiate of Pilley’s Island. 

A total of 104 runners represented nine different schools — Dorset Collegiate, Indian River High, Valmont Academy of King’s Point, Copper Ridge Academy of Baie Verte, Cape John Collegiate of La Scie, Main River Academy of Pollards Point, MSB Regional Academy of Middle Arm, Pasadena Academy and St. Peter’s Academy of Humber Arm South — at the regional competition. 

Members of the Indian River High junior girls’ cross-country team included Kylea Keough, Cassie Hewlett, Rebecca Northcotte, Brooke Clarke, Allie Oxford, Megan Clarke and Anna Brooks. 

Members of the Indian River High senior girls’ cross-country team included Cieara Young -Chatman, Maria Lawlor, Mikayla Tuck, Jessica Jacobs, Alisha Bennett, Robyn Roberts, Megan Paddock and Lily Jacobs. 

Senior boys from Indian River included Joey Sparkes, Kyle Tuck, Mitchell Downton, Aaron Saunders, Max Locke and Christian Morgan. 

Junior boys from Dorset included Jesse Short, Ethan Simms, Carter Walters, Logan Colbourne, Micah Winsor and Ashton Blackler.  

The individual winners in junior girls went to Sarah Warren of Dorset, first; Cassie Hewlett of Indian River, second; and Rebecca Northcott of Indian River, third. The Dorset Collegiate team finished second and MSB Regional Academy of Middle Arm finished third. 

Individual winners in the junior boys’ event were Jesse Short of Dorset Collegiate, first; Kaelan Rideout of Valmont, second; and Noah Walsh of Copper Ridge, third. Copper Ridge took silver in the team standings, while Indian River finished third. 

It was a top-three finish in the senior girls’ individual race for Indian River runners. Mikayla Tuck, Jessica Jacobs and then Maria Lawlor crossed the finish line in the top three places. Dorset Coolegiate took second in the team standings. 

Benjamin Tizzard of Dorset Collegiate was the fastest runner in the senior boys’ competition. He finished ahead of a pair of Indian River runners; Joey Sparkes, second, and Mitchell Downton, third. Dorset Collegiate finished second in the senior boys’ event.
