Defending champion Holy Cross Kirby Group officially holds first place in the Johnson Insurance Challenge Cup men’s soccer league. However, the Double Blues of Stavanger Dental Feildians will probably want to point out a thing or two when it comes to the standings.

Holy Cross (8-2-0) sits three points ahead of Feildians, but the Double Blues have two games in hand.

What’s more, both of the Crusaders’ losses came at the hands of Feildians (7-1-0), including a 3-1 victory by the latter team in a head-to-head meeting on Saturday at King George V Park in St. John’s.

That result put Feildians in first place, but just for a day. On Sunday at KGV, Holy Cross edge the C.B.S. That Pro Look Strikers 2-1, leaving the Crusaders ahead in the points race once again. Feildians were idle Sunday, but have a chance to claim official hold of first place with a win Wednesday at KGV, where they’ll take on the Strikers (5-3-1) .

There was one other game in Challenge Cup play on Sunday. That was at Centennial Field in St. Lawrence, where the homestanding Laurentians (3-6-2) double Paradise North Atlantic 6-3. That means Paradise remains winless through 11 games, although the team didn’t come away totally unrewarded from their visit to the Burin Peninsula. On Saturday,  Aaron Greenham’s goal at the 76-minute mark gave Paradise (0-10-1) a 1-1 tie with St. Lawrence and their first point of the campaign.
