The St. John’s Edge don’t have any players yet, but they do have a full coaching staff.

The Edge have announced Jeff Morrison and Glen Sooley will be assistant coaches to Steve Marcus for the 2019-20 National Basketball League of Canada season.

Sooley, a Mount Pearl native who has been active as a coach in provincial age-group programs, is actually returning to Edge for a third season, having worked on the staffs of Jeff Dunlap, the team’s original head coach; Doug Plumb, who took over at the start of last season; and Marcus.

Sooley took on a greater role late last season when Plumb suddenly resigned and Marcus was promoted from assistant to interim head coach.

“Glen is the type of guy every organization needs,” said Marcus in a team release. “No task is too small for him and he goes above and beyond to help us in anyway necessary.”

Marcus was recently confirmed as St. John’s full-time head coach. Meanwhile, Plumb was named head coach of the NBLC’s London Lightning last month.

While Morrison is a brand new hire, he is more than familiar with Marcus. From 2014 to 2016, the two worked together with the NBA G-League’s Maine Red Claws, who were coached by Scott Morrison, who is Jeff Morrison’s uncle, and who has since been hired as an assistant coach of the NBA’s Boston Celtics.

A native of Charlottetown, P.E.I., and a former player at Holland College, Jeff Morrison most recently was an assistant coach for the NBLC’s Island Storm.

“Jeff thinks the game in a very progressive way and is one of the best video guys I have ever been around,’ Said Marcus. “ The St. John’s Edge got better today with the addition of Jeff Morrison.”

The Edge’s 2019-20 schedule has not yet been released, although the league has announced the new season won’t start until after Christmas.
