New York City
Only 245 other runners crossed the finish line of the 2018 New York City Marathon in front of Leo Papail.
The Lord’s Cove native, who now lives in Ontario, completed the event, held on Nov. 4, in 2:43:03. Some 53,000 runners participated in the marathon.
“(The) course was challenging with a slight head-wind up until 30 km and rolling hills in Central Park made it extremely difficult to keep the pace consistent," Papail wrote in an email to The Southern Gazette.
Papail achieved his goal of finishing the race in under 2:45, which guaranteed him entry in the next Berlin and Tokyo marathons.
It’s a busy month for Papail, with the Ontario cross-country championships in King City on Nov. 11 and the nationals in Kingston, Ont. on Nov. 24.
