The Tri-Pen Osprey were the only team from the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League to reach the playoffs in the annual Moncton AAA Challenge which finished up Sunday in Moncton, N.B.
The Osprey went 3-0 in the round-robin before losing 8-1 to Pictou County Weeks in a quarter-final game. The Western Kings, 1-0-2 in the round-robin, secured a wild card game, but lost 6-4 to the Richmond Hill, Ont. Coyotes.
The major midget league’s other three teams competed — the St. John’s Maple Leafs were 2-1, East Coast Blizzard 0-2-1 and Central IcePak were 0-3.
The St. John’s Hitmen from the provincial AAA bantam league took part in the bantam division, and reached the quarter-finals before dropping a 4-3 decision to The Gulls.
Abby Newhook of the Hitmen was the tournament’s second-highest scorer. She had three goals and five assists in three games.
Newhook has already committed to attend Boston College and play for the Eagles in 2021, at the earliest.
