ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) is introducing a new development plan for elite basketball athletes and coaches.

The NLBA Academy Program will be comprised of two pathways – the Elite Academy and the Select Academy – and will be launched with tryouts in September.

Players will come together and train over five targeted weekends throughout the year, according to a NLBA release.

It’s hoped the weekend format will allow coaches and athletes from across the province to participate and will help spread development opportunities outside the Avalon Peninsula.

“We believe this change in format will give our players and coaches an unprecedented chance to improve,” said NLBA president Tom Warren.

Blair White will lead the male program while the female side will be led by Geoff Moore. Athletes will train under the lead trainers, provincial coaches and guest coaches.

Program details and registration information will be released next week, the NLBA release indicated.
