Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s mid-season celebration of the sport will kick off tomorrow with a ceremony at the Polar Centre in St. Anthony.

Minor Hockey Week will run in the province from Jan. 13-20.

The provincial slogan this season is “The game is better … when we are in it together.”

Arnold Kelly, Hockey NL’s chair for minor hockey, believes the message suggests all stakeholders need to strive towards a common vision.

“We want to promote team objectives and that so much can be accomplished when we are working together on common goals, rather than individual agendas,” the Goose Bay resident said in a news release.

Hockey NL selected the St. Anthony and Area Minor Hockey Association as this year’s Minor Hockey Week hosts.

The Northern Peninsula association has been a long-standing member of the Hockey NL and offers hockey programs for 130 children.

The association will be hosting a novice jamboree participating from nearby minor hockey associations Straits and Twin Town.

They also have plans for a skating event for all of the registered members of their association.

Kelly will be on hand to kick off the week’s celebration in St. Anthony and is excited about the novice tournament.

“One of the new initiatives this year is mandatory half ice hockey games for players in novice to target skill development, fun and competition. This is a change in our structure from the traditional full ice games at this young age that we believe will benefit the membership in the long term,” he said.

Across the province throughout the week, there will be numerous tournaments, development camps, try hockey settings and female programs.
