GARNISH-FRENCHMAN’S COVE, N.L. — Under almost ideal conditions, 97 runners toed the start line June 2 in the 36th running of the VOCM 740 Garnish-Frenchman’s Cove 10-kilometre Road Race.
Male division
David Freake of St. John’s took the early lead and maintained that lead, crossing the finish line in first place in a time of 33:30.
In second place was Tyler Cole, formerly of Marystown, now living in St. John’s, in a time of 34:17.
Third place in the male division went to Darren Jensen of St. John’s in a time of 36:52.
Female division
First place in the female division went to Lisa Collins-Sheppard of Lamaline in a time of 36:01, over four minutes ahead of her nearest female competitor, Janelle Simmons who finished in second place in a time of 40:41. Janelle is a former resident of Grand Bank now living in St. John’s.
Local runner, Megan Ryan of Marystown finished third in a time of 43:33.
Age class divisions
Peninsula runners dominated the various age class divisions.
Darcie Stapleton of Marystown won the under 19 female category in a time of 49:40, while Megan Ryan, also of Marystown, took first place in the 20-29 female division.
Michelle Strang of Marystown was first in the 40-49 age class in a time of 45:57 while Joan Pope of Grand Bank took first place in the 70+ category in a time of 1:04:41.
Terry Flemming of Lamaline was first in the male 50-59 category.
Race conveners Lyman Keeping and Gordon Brockerville thanked the sponsors for continuing to support this race as well as all the volunteers who of their time to help make the race a success.
