Copper Ridge and Valmont Academy win girls basketball regionals

BAIE VERTE, NL — Copper Ridge Academy put up a defensive wall early and often to earn a berth in the provincials during the 3A girls basketball regional two-game series with Indian River High.

The girls from Baie Verte held their Springdale rivals to just four first-quarter points and nine in the half of the first game — a 36-23 victory. They followed that up with a 37-24 win in Game 2 of the total-point matchup at Copper Ridge Academy Saturday.

Theresa Walsh proved to be a force on the offensive end in the Game 1 victory, scoring half of her team’s 36 points. As did Crystal Sacrey and Madison Northcotte, Walsh scored four points in the opening quarter to open up a 12-4 lead after one period of play. Walsh took over with eight of her team’s 12 points in the second quarter and scored 12 at halftime to help her team to a 24-9 advantage.

Jaime Walsh chipped in with six points in the win.

Rebecca Northcotte led Indian River High with 13 points in the loss, while teammate Maria Lawlor scored 8 in Game 1.

Copper Ridge made a much more balanced scoring effort in the Game 2-win with Sacrey leading the way with a 10-point effort. Teammates Theresa Walsh and Madison Northcotte helped out again with eight points each.

The Springdale contingent kept Game 2 closer through the first half, trailing just 18-13 at the midway break, but a 12-5 run in the third quarter sealed the victory for Copper Ridge.

Indian River got eight points from Jessica Jacobs in Game 2, while Rebecca Northcotte scored six.

The 3A girls provincials will be held in Placentia by Laval High March 16-18.

Valmont Academy wins A girls regionals

Valmont Academy put forth a dominating performance in the girls A basketball regional held in Hampden Saturday.
The King’s Point team went undefeated to earn a berth in the provincial tournament to be held in St. Mary’s at Dunne Memorial Academy on the March 16 weekend.

Valmont downed host Hampden Academy 49-18 in the championship game. The team was undefeated in the three-team tournament, winning round robin games 77-17 over Cape John Collegiate of La Scie and 53-6 over Hampden.

Hampden defeated Cape John 40-30 to make it to the final.
