Julianne King would play volleyball 24-7 if she could get away with it.

The 16-year-old Level 2 student at Corner Brook High was this year’s Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association Junior Female Player of the Year.

An active teenager who also excels on the soccer pitch as a member of Corner Brook’s Under-18 women’s soccer squad, King makes no bones about the fun times she has when she’s on the volleyball court.

“It’s probably more important to me than school is. It’s such a big part of my life every single day,” King said earlier this week.

King was a dominant force as the libero for the Corner Brook 4A Titans female volleyball squad that won gold at the provincial 4A female volleyball tournament and the provincial U17 female volleyball championships.

As a member of Newfoundland and Labrador’s U16 female volleyball squad her impressive season was highlighted by tournament all-star honours at the provincial U18 female volleyball championship.

Claiming gold at the provincial 4A female tournament was the highlight of her season. It was a tournament where a younger Titans team wasn’t expected to compete against some older and more experienced teams in the hunt.

“We didn’t expect to win it, but it was such a great accomplishment because our team was so good,” she said. “We were a younger team and we beat an older team and it wasn’t expected of us.”

King wasn’t able to attend the awards banquet on the east coast, but she was pretty pumped when she received word that her efforts on the volleyball court didn’t go unnoticed.

“I was really excited. I was jumping up and down when I found out. It makes me really happy,” she said. “I guess it’s a really good accomplishment to win the award.”
