The host Team Oke proved to be mighty indeed on the opening day of the 2019 senior men’s provincial curling championships Thursday at the Corner Brook Curling Club.
The rink — consisting of Gary Oke, Dennis Bruce, Blair Fradsham and Michael Mullins — went 2-0 on the day, following a 7-4 triumph over Team Ryan of the Carol Curling Club in Labrador City on Thursday night.
Earlier in the day, Oke defeated Team Harvey of St. John’s 7-5.
The Oke team will see the ice again 2:30 p.m. today against another St. John’s rink in Team Henderson.
Other scores on Thursday were: Team Harvey 10, Team House 3, and Team Ryan 8, Team Henderson 7.
On the women’s side, meanwhile, the host rink consisting of Marcheta Gallant, Linda Glavine, Madonna Day and Donna Shears lost their only game, a 9-6 defeat at the hands of Team Dawe of St. John’s.
Dawe downed Team Roberts of St. John’s in the only other action from the women’s bracket.
The Gallant rink faces Team Roberts 2:30 p.m. today.
AUS Championship
At the Atlantic University Sport men’s curling championship in St. John’s, the Memorial University of Newfoundland rink — featuring Corner Brookers Daniel Bruce and Nathan King, along with Stephenville’s Ryan McNeil Lamswood, as well as Greg Blyde of St. John’s — found themselves at 1-1 after the first day of play.
The team downed St. Francis Xavier University 13-3 in the late draw, after losing 9-4 to Dalhousie University earlier in the day.
