Kaetlyn Osmond named Alberta's 2017 female athlete of the year

Newfoundland and Labrador is not the only province that sees figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond as one of its own.

The Alberta Sports Connection (Sports Alberta) has named Osmond, who won a gold medal in the team event and a bronze in women's singles at the PyeongChang Olympic Games, as Alberta’s 2017 female athlete of the year.

Osmond, a 22-year-old from Marystown moved with family to Sherwood Park, Alta., when she was 12 and she has trained out of Edmonton ever since.

Osmond isn’t the only Olympic medallist to be honoured by the Alberta sports body — Justin Cripps, who piloted Canada’s two-man bobsleigh team to a gold medal at the PyeongChang Games, was named the male athlete of the year.

Even though Osmond has lived away from Marystown for a decade, she still maintains close ties to her hometown, where many of her relatives live. She'll be back there in April as the special guest for the Ice Crystals Skating Club's annual show. Osmond began her skating career with the Ice Crystals.
