Lachlan Cantwell is quick on his feet and loves to run.
He loves the idea of being free to roam in wide open spaces.
He loves to boot around the soccer ball with his friends.
It’s safe to say the five-year-old has found something that brings a smile to his face.
“I play soccer because it’s fun and I love kicking the ball around,” Cantwell said Thursday afternoon.
Heading to kindergarten in the fall, the son of Mike Cantwell and Heather Tucker is having some anxious moments this week as he prepares for his first soccer tournament — the Pasadena U6 Co-Ed Summer Blast Soccer Tournament — taking place in the Humber Valley community on Saturday.
He figures he will be one of the guys looking to defend the big cage for his side instead of being one of the big goalscorers, but there is something that the little guy believes has to be corrected before the first game.
“Everybody keeps shooting on the wrong net,” Cantwell said.
No doubt some players may need more time to adjust to playing a real soccer game at a young age, but Cantwell is playing the game for the right reason so he doesn’t really care about winning or losing.
“As long as I have fun,” he said.
Pasadena has two teams competing in the six-team event that also features two teams from Corner Brook and one from both Stephenville and Deer Lake.
A ball being booted around on a large field with a bunch of young boys and girls all having a great time … the scoreboard will mean little at the final whistle.
