GLOVERTOWN, NL — The Indian River High girls’ slo-pitch softball team made a valiant run at a provincial championship in Glovertown last weekend, coming up just short in the semifinals against the eventual hometown champions.
It was a tight 2-1 loss for the Springdale team, which finished with a 1-1 record in the round robin of 3A provincials. The team defeated Dorset Collegiate of Pilley’s Island in the quarterfinal by a 11-5 margin.
Indian River defeated Templeton Academy of Meadows 8-5, but lost to White Hills Academy of St. Anthony — the eventual runners up — in their second game of the tournament by a 7-3 score.
Dorset Collegiate lost to Heritage Collegiate of Lethbridge by a narrow 6-5 score and suffered a 21-7 defeat at the hands of Glovertown.
Glovertown beat White Hills in the championship game 9-5.
2A girls’ softball
Cape John Collegiate of La Scie also made a run at a provincial championship in the 2A tournament the team hosted last weekend. They also bowed out in the semi-final, losing 14-11 to the eventual champions, J.M. Olds Collegiate of Twillingate.
Cape John defeated Canon Richards Memorial of Flower’s Cove 15-3 and Fortune Bay Academy 19-1, but lost to Burgeo Academy 7-0 in the round robin.
Valmont Academy of King’s Point went winless in the tournament. They lost 15-2 to Bishop White School of Port Rexton, 28-0 to J.M. Olds Collegiate, and 16-1 to Baltimore School of Ferryland.
2A boys’ soccer
Copper Ridge Academy of Baie Verte held their own at the boys’ soccer provincials in Cordroy Valley last weekend. They also lost in the semifinal in their quest to win a provincial banner.
They finished the tournament with a 1-1-1 record — losing to Holy Name of Mary Academy of Lawn 7-2, tying Gros Morne Academy 1-1, and beating host Belanger Memorial 4-0.
The Baie Verte boys bowed out of the 2A provincials with a 3-1 semifinal loss in a rematch against the Gros Morne team.
Holy Name of Mary won the tournament with a 9-2 rout of Gros Morne.
3A boys’ soccer
Indian River High could not muster up much offence in the provincial boys soccer tournament held in St. Lawrence last weekend.
If you don’t score, you can’t win — and that proved true for the boys at the 3A tournament. They did score once against Stephenville High in a 3-1 loss, but then fell to Menihek High School of Labrador City 5-0. They bowed out of the competition with a 1-0 loss to St. Kevin’s High of St. John’s.
Menihek High beat Elwood High of Deer Lake 2-0 to win the championship.
