The St. John's Edge made it official Thursday, signing former NBA star centre Glen "Big Baby" Davis to a National Basketball League of Canada contract.
Even though he only arrived in St. John's late Wednesday night, will get in just one full practice with his new team and hasn't played in a competitive five-on-five league in more than three years, Davis is expected to be in the St. John's lineup for a game against the Charlottetown, P.E.I.-based Island Storm Friday night at Mile One.
Davis, whose addition to the Edge was first reported by The Telegram on Dec. 5, says he decided to join St. John's because he liked "the vibe" around the team and because of what he learned about Newfoundland — he's never been here before — through his research, mainly done via Google.
The 32-year-old Davis played eight seasons in the NBA, winning a league championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008.
