Makaila Hudson and Marie Manstan were hoping to place for the World Juniors in Europe, but their qualifying race was cancelled due to weather.
They pressed on and competed against top athletes for the Ontario Cup.
Hudson took sixth place for junior girls in the 7.5-kilometre classic race on the first day, and came in ninth the next day in the 5-km classic. The following day she came in fifth for the qualifier for the 1.2-kilometre sprint skate race and won the B-final.
Manstan raced the 7.5 Km classic sprint, and won the B final for juvenile girls.
Hudson said while having the trial race cancelled was frustrating, she can see the silver lining.
“If I did the trial and had good results I would have gotten to go to Europe. But it’s an Under 23 competition, and I’m only 17. I have a lot of time to improve and get better.”
Hudson’s next set of races is Eastern’s in Gatno, Que. Then she’ll prepare for snowshoeing at the Labrador Winter Games for the first two days before flying to the Yukon for Nationals.
