Carl Barrett sees groups of swimmers, bikers and runners on the move around Corner Brook on a regular basis in an effort to keep physically fit.

He understands why they love what they do and promotes the lifestyle to those who are willing to listen, but he wants them to see how much fun they can have when they combine the three disciplines into one.

He’s hoping some of the individuals he shares the road with will get the itch to give triathlon a try and he’s willing to do what he can to motivate them to take the first stride.

Barrett will share his wisdom and knowledge, from 20 years of participating in triathlon, as the guest instructor for a Triathlon Ready Clinic tonight 7-9 p.m. at Academy Canada on University Drive in Corner Brook.

The clinic, which is free of charge, is all about Barrett’s desire to encourage local people to take on the challenge of triathlon who may not have tried it before or unfamiliar with how the three disciplines exist within the one sport.

“So, my main goal really is to dispel some of the myths or the insecurities that some people may have about doing a triathlon,” Barrett said Monday as rain poured down on the city after a super hot weekend in Corner Brook.

The clinic is open to those athletes who fall in the beginner or intermediate category. Barrett will spend an hour talking about what’s involved with triathlon from everything to nutrition, transition planning and proper equipment to what an athlete can expect when they show up on the start line.

“Give people the confidence to believe they can do it because everybody can do it,” he said.

Once he has done what he can to prepare folks for competing in either triathlon or duathlon on Sunday, participants will be taken through a practice run of the race day transition areas so they won’t be so intimidated by it on race day.

“It’s just a matter of taking it step by step. It doesn’t have to be a complicated process as long as you make it as simple as possible.”

Anybody interesting in registering for the clinic can email [email protected] or show up at the clinic and they will be accommodated.
