CARBONEAR, N.L. — A Carbonear Collegiate teacher has been recognized for his long-standing dedication to school sports in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ed Jarvis, well known locally for his many years coaching girls basketball at the school, was among the honourees at the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) annual awards ceremony, held May 31 in St. John's.

Jarvis was one of three recipients this year of an Executive Service Award, presented in recognition of volunteer ending their term as either a board or council member for the school athletics organization.

In his case, that commitment was extensive. Jarvis is ending 15 years of service to SSNL's board of directors and varsity council. According to a biography prepared for the event, Jarvis was especially valuable to provincial school sports as a member of the basketball and soccer sport advisory committees. He was also part of the committee that established the junior varsity program.

Originally from Harbour Breton, Jarvis started coaching girls basketball in the Conception Bay North region in 1995 and before that was involved in coaching table tennis and volleyball.
