ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The sport of swimming was the big winner Saturday night as it garnered three awards, and saw a Hall of Famer inducted, during Sport Newfoundland and Labrador’s Stars and Legends Awards Gala at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.
Swimming’s Kate Sullivan and Noah Cumby were selected junior female and male athletes of the year, while Joan Butler was the 2018 official of the year.
Bill Hogan from swimming, with an impressive national and international resume, was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The senior male and female athlete of the year awards went to Paralympic athlete Liam Hickey of sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball, and soccer’s Teri Murphy. Trevor Budgell of ball hockey was named coach of the year and the Brad Gushue curling team of Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker, 2018 Brier champs and world silver medallists, was selected team of the year.
The executive of the year was David Liverman of cricket, figure skating and soccer, and volleyball’s Fintan Gaudette was the volunteer of the year.
Sport Newfoundland and Labrador’s award selection committee chose the recipients from a list of nominees compiled by 16 member organizations across the province.
The new Hall of Famers inducted were Hogan, Angus Barrett (athlete/builder) of soccer, Ward Gosse (athlete) of softball and hockey, Terry Ryan Sr. (athlete) of hockey and baseball and Michael Ryder (athlete) of hockey.
