A half dozen ball hockey players from Newfoundland are celebrating world championships today after helping Canadian national entries to gold medals at the 2018 ISBHF masters championships Sunday in Pembroke, Bermuda.
Jeremy Bishop of Corner Brook, Peter Cabral and Terry Ryan of Mount Pearl, Jamie Tobin of Cape Broyle and Harold White of St. John’s are members of the men’s championship team, while Susan Stuckless of Herring Neck, Notre Dame Bay was part of the Canadian women’s entry that claimed gold.
Ian Marshall of St. John’s was team physician for the Canadian masters men.
Members of the Newfoundland contingent played a huge role in the win in the men’s championship game, where Team Canada defeated another entry from this country, the Halton, Ont., Leafs, 4-0.
The line of Ryan, Cabral and Bishop had eight points, with Ryan scoring twice and adding two assists, Bishop registering one tally and Cabral contributing three helpers.
Ryan (8G, 4A) and Bishop (4G, 8A), who is originally from Grand Falls-Windsor, both finished tied for second in tournament scoring with 12 points.
Canada was 7-1 in the men’s tourney, which featured 12 teams from nine countries.
Stuckless was Canada’s third-leading scorer in the women’s tourney, with two goals and five assists in six games, all Canadian wins.
The sixth victory for Stuckless and her teammates came Sunday when they edged one of two United States teams 2-1 in the final.
