They are looking for their first Newfoundland and Labrador women’s curling championship as a quartet, but each member of the St. John’s rink skipped by Kelli Turpin has won a provincial ladies’ crown as part of another team.
Turpin (as Kelli Sharpe) was the third for Heather Strong’s N.L champs in 1998, 1999 and 2000, while second Beth Hamilton played the same position for Strong’s title-winners in 2005.
Lead Carrie Vautour also threw first stones for Stacie Curtis in 2016 as Curtis won the first of three straight provincial crowns.
Stephanie Guzzwell was the third as Curtis (then known as Stacie Devereaux) won in 2011, and she is the vice-skip for Turpin as well.
The combination of former champs comprises one of six rinks competing in the 2019 provincial Scotties, being played at Bally Haly Country Club this week. And with a 2-0 record after the opening draws Thursday, they share the early lead with the team skipped by Cathlia Ward.
All six teams in the event curl out of the Re/Max Centre (St. John’s Curling Club).
Devereaux now lives in Florida and is not competing in the event. But the other three members of the defending champions are playing at Bally Haly, with Erica Trickett as skip.
