CINDY'S SNAPSHOT: Puzzeling over a “mackerel” sky” in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley

There was quite a display in the sky over Black Rock in Kings county NS on Wednesday. Scott West recognized this as a “mackerel” sky”. He wondered why …since his wise grandmother always told me if there was a mackerel sky, to expect rain in 24 hours. Depending on where you live that expression can vary. My grandmother used to say: “Mackerel sky – never long wet, never long dry. All week, we’ve watched a parade systems travel off the Atlantic coast. The proximity of these created high altitude atmospheric waves – aka – rows of cirrocumulus or a mackerel sky.

Can you say gorgeous? Ronald O’Toole sent this ‘Sunrise at the Castle’ photo he took on Sept. 17 at Logy Bay, N.L. The sun’s rays look like the petals of a flower as it rises out of the Atlantic Ocean. Logy Bay is located near Torbay and is about 10 minutes from downtown St. John’s.

Judy Doyle sent this photo of deer visiting her property on Cape Breton’s Mira River on Monday morning. She said deer are frequent visitors to the area and yesterday she counted as many as seven walking along the river near her home. The deer silhouetted against the morning sun are a beautiful sight.

When hurricane Larry made landfall on the west side of the Avalon on Sept. 11, many things were blown around. Once the storm cleared, Don Simms found this lovely butterfly resting on a sedum in his yard in Mount Pearl, N.L. I wasn't sure what kind of butterfly it was, so I looked it up. Here's what I found. This beauty is a Vanessa Atalanta or red admiral: a medium-sized butterfly with black wings, reddish bands, and white spots.
