The Mother’s Day weekend is upon us. There’s something about moms and spring sunshine that seem to go hand in hand. I wish I could have arranged for nicer weather this weekend but that is out my hands.
The weather will be cool, but quite fair across the Maritime provinces on Sunday – really not too bad at all. The icy north wind makes a return, so do keep that in mind if you have something planned outside for mom on Sunday. If you live in Newfoundland and Labrador, I suggest you move your planned outdoor activities inside. I don’t expect you’ll see much sun at all. In fact, the only “S” word I see for Sunday, sadly, is snow.
While snow is not the weather of choice for any Sunday in May, it did turn out to be just what was needed for one young officer, more than 50 years ago.
This lovely email crossed my desk earlier this spring:
“This is for my favourite weather lady. Back in 1963, I was the navigator of a frigate in Halifax and I was also landing party officer. We were doing our two-week sea training and just before the Mother’s Day weekend, Commander sea training said that I was to take my landing party by ships boat to camp on Sambro Island for Saturday night and come back Sunday. A horrible way to spend Mother’s Day weekend. I asked about the weather and he said that the only way you get out of it is if it snows.
Saturday morning there was six inches of snow on the ground. Who says prayers aren’t answered.”

It did indeed snow: 12 cm of snow was measured at the Halifax airport and the visibility was reduced to near zero in snow and fog – the day before Mother’s Day which coincidentally was also May 11, back in 1963.
Peter’s prayers were answered. I pray that regardless of the weather, you reach out to your mom this Mother’s Day – a visit, a call or just a quiet moment cherishing a fond memory.
