It was not warm yesterday, but it’s even colder today. The dome of arctic air that’s been parked west of the region is snuggling in a little - that means the cold is about to bottom out!
As accurate as it might be, the temperature reading on your car thermometer is not telling the whole story. Along with today’s unseasonably cold temperatures, we have some wind. It doesn’t take a lot of wind when it’s this cold. Our morning wind-chill values range from –25 C to –38 across Atlantic Canada. Extreme cold warnings are in effect for Newfoundland; the coldest pocket will sit over Newfoundland with wind-chill values near –35 well into Thursday morning. Those numbers sound cold and they are, but more importantly, they can be dangerous. When the wind chill is below –40, unprotected skin can freeze in less than 10 minutes.
