Model: 2014+ Cadillac CTS

Vehicle type: Premium luxury sedan

History/description:

The Cadillac CTS’s latest iteration launched for 2014 with new style, power and equipment accenting a ground-up re-do of the popular luxury sedan marque that would, once again, compete strongly within the heart of the mid-sized luxury sedan market.

Feature content touches included Magnetic Ride Control suspension, OnStar and integrated Wi-Fi, all wrapped up in a striking body. Don’t miss highly adjustable front seats with heated and chilled leather, premium Bose stereo provisions, full multimedia connectivity, self-parking technology, a head-up display, and more.

All CTS models from this era were four-door sedans, which should be cross-shopped with comparable products from Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Volvo and others.

Available engines included a turbocharged two-litre four-cylinder with 272 horsepower, a popular 3.6-litre V6 with 321 horsepower, and a twin-turbocharged V6 with 420 horsepower. Widespread availability of AWD helped cater to Canadian drivers, and CTS models with AWD are set apart by a ‘4’ in the name plaque.

A premium look and feel, pleasing performance, good fuel economy, and a well-sorted blend of luxury and technology were reported by owners. Premium stereo systems and climate-controlled seats are among its most commonly-praised features, and ride quality on most models is also said to be excellent.

What owners dislike:

Complaints include somewhat-limited on-board space for smaller items, and a cabin that can easily feel cramped for larger drivers. Some drivers also wish for a more straightforward experience from the central command system.

The test drive:

Reports are patchy at best, but some owners have reported broken or malfunctioning interior parts, including the sunroof sunshade screen, and the power seatbelt retractors. Neither of these is inexpensive to repair, so test-drivers are advised to spend some time going over every possible feature and electrically-operated accessory within the vehicle to confirm functionality. Scrutinize the central command interface, climate control, climate-controlled seats and adjusters, all windows and locks, the sunroof, the backup camera, and all steering-wheel mounted controls.

A full inspection of the CTS’s body and all exterior trim and other provisions is highly recommended as well. Ensure all badging is present and properly-fastened, and that the trim around the windows isn’t peeling.

Confirm that the paint finish on the roof is in satisfactory condition, and inspect all exterior lighting housings for sign of moisture buildup or pooled water within.

Be sure that any remaining warranty coverage is still intact, and hasn’t been voided by some failure of the past owner(s) to properly maintain the vehicle.

Failure to adhere strictly to all maintenance requirements can void remaining warranty coverage, so check all service records carefully against the maintenance schedule. If the CTS you’re considering is powered by the turbocharged four-cylinder, check the condition of the idle with the air conditioner turned on, and then, turned off. A shuddering or rough idle has been reported, which can indicate a problem.

Usually, this is fixed with a simple software update, but be sure to have a technician check the vehicle’s engine if you have any concerns.

If the central command system lags, jams up, crashes or chokes, a hard reset or software update might be the solution. If not, new system hardware may be required. Some owners have had associated components, including the entire central display unit, replaced under warranty.

A great way to prevent buying a model that’s concealing any hidden problems or issues is to have a diagnostic scan carried out by a professional technician. Even if no check-engine light is present, this simple check can uncover numerous issues with a plethora of systems that would otherwise go undetected. This scan can be arranged with your nearest dealer, takes minutes to complete, and is relatively affordable.

Also, consider a full check of the CTS’ battery and charging system before you buy, and plan to replace the battery if it doesn’t pass the test with top marks. Weak or dying batteries can cause a multitude of problems with on-board electronics, and is often a prime suspect in the presence of unwanted electronic issues. Use a trickle-charger when your CTS will be parked more than a few days at a time for added protection against issues caused by dying batteries.

Finally, for long-haul confidence, be sure to change engine oil and spark plugs ahead of the intervals set out in the owner’s manual, and to never stretch any maintenance intervals. Also, be sure to always fuel with top-tier rated gasoline from a reputable fuelling station. These steps can all contribute to a cleaner and longer-running Direct Injected engine that’ll perform better for the long run.

The verdict:

With all service records and a thumbs-up after a simple pre-purchase inspection, the current-generation 2014+ CTS can be bought with relative confidence. Reliability through its first few model years looks solid, though shoppers may want to consider any extended-warranty coverage available, for protection from potentially-pricey repairs.
